The last eight years have seen The Hyperfactory R&D Lab unveil consistently award-winning, innovative, ground-breaking mobile platforms and services.

A dedicated R&D team in Hyderabad, headed up in Auckland, New Zealand has a continual roadmap of R&D projects underway for internal and client use. We are the most innovative and awarded team in the industry. Awards don’t sell things, but they do recognize that every year since 2001 we have led the way in innovation, thought-leadership and ideas. Some of our notable world first achievements include:

  • TXT-to-TV ticker allowing real-time live text-messaging up to broadcast television for CanWest (2001)
  • Radio SMS club & playlist platform for Clear Channel enabling radio stations to create mobile clubs to remarket to and for users to text in at any time to find out what song is currently playing (2002)
  • Integrated MMS campaign for M&M (2003)
  • Mobile auction promotion for Coca Cola using pure SMS to engage in a complete auction experience bidding, winning and losing via text (2004)
  • On-deck branded carrier 3G promotion for adidas in Hong Kong for 3G with rich media video, downloads and games (2004)
  • Multi-lingual branded mobile video content for McDonalds (2005)
  • First truly global mobile campaign (4-continents) for Motorola (2006)
  • Viral mobile video campaign for Bacardi (2006)
  • Augmented Reality for the Wellington Zoo the much-imitated, world first deployment of augmented reality through mobile devices (2007). More modern variations of this include the augmented reality program for Fanta Europe

Engaging the Lab

The Lab helps brands and technology departments in companies pioneer and experiment with emerging opportunities in mobile to push the boundaries and lead the pack. The Lab can undertake specific R&D projects and assignments to carry out test-and-learn iniatives or test technical boundaries to achieve new outcomes.

In addition the Lab runs User Experience Testing to optimise mobile experiences and program flow.

Fanta Virtual Tennis is the world’s first multiplayer augmented reality tennis game. To play, two friends take sides of a printed game board and connect their phones via Bluetooth. A ball and court appear and players volley back and forth over the net. The game features real life sound and vibration effects, scoring and European language support.

The game is part of a mobile portal that houses a series of fun downloads for teenagers in Europe. The hub includes a variety of branded wallpapers, ringtones and games to provide content supporting entry level to high-end handsets.

The Fanta mobile site and Fanta apps, including Fanta Virtual Tennis and Virtual Fanta Crew are currently being rolled out in countries throughout Europe. Activation tactics include on pack, OOH, POS, radio and web.
